Government of UAE applied Excise tax on some goods, consumption of which are not good for the human health and environment. Excise tax is an indirect tax and levied on production, import, stock piling and release of some specific category of goods. Excise tax is levied on the retail price of goods and at the rates levied on the excise goods concerned. The following goods will be subject to excise tax in the country:
• Soft drinks – 50%
• Energy Drinks – 100%
• Tobacco Products – 100%
Businesses obligated to pay Excise Tax, must Register with the Federal Tax Authority and Submit tax returns on a monthly basis and Pay the tax due on the same date as submitting the tax return. Excise is due on a specific group of goods intended for consumption within the country. The tax is due when “goods are put up for consumption,” which is when they are put up for free circulation within the country.
Excise tax is due on:
• Excise goods that have been imported into the country.
• Excise goods offered for consumption within the country (for example, manufactured goods released from a specific region/tax warehouse, etc.).
• Excise goods acquired by the stocking person for which tax has not been previously paid.
